Copy Dentures in Singapore: What They Are and How They Work

For patients who have worn the same set of dentures for many years, the prospect of having a new set made can be a source of concern, particularly if the existing ones fit well and feel familiar. Copy dentures (sometimes called duplicate or replica dentures) are a technique where existing dentures are used as a template for fabricating a new set. This article explains what the process involves and who it may be relevant for.
What Are Copy Dentures?
Copy dentures are new dentures fabricated using an existing, well-fitting pair as a reference. Rather than working entirely from fresh impressions of the gum tissue, the dental technician uses a mould or scan of the current dentures to replicate their shape, dimensions, and bite position in a new set.
This approach is used in some cases to reduce the adjustment period associated with conventional new dentures, since the new pair closely mirrors what the patient’s mouth is already accustomed to.
How Is the Process Typically Carried Out?
The specific technique may vary between clinics and dental laboratories, but a general outline is as follows:
1. The existing dentures are assessed for current fit, occlusion (bite), and condition
2. A copy or mould is taken of the existing dentures, capturing their dimensions and tooth arrangement
3. New dentures are fabricated in the dental laboratory using the copy as a guide
4. The dentist checks and adjusts the new dentures at fitting, incorporating any necessary corrections
5. A review appointment is typically scheduled to assess comfort and make further refinements
The dentist may also take the opportunity to incorporate clinical improvements such as correcting a bite issue that has developed over time, or updating worn teeth while retaining the overall familiar shape.

Who May This Be Relevant For?
Copy dentures are one of several options a dentist may discuss in the following situations:
• A patient whose current dentures fit well but are physically worn, cracked, or deteriorating
• A patient who has had difficulty adapting to new dentures in the past
• A patient who wants a spare or duplicate set (e.g. in case of loss or damage)
• Older patients who have worn the same denture design for many years and prefer a familiar fit
Not all patients are suitable candidates for copy dentures. A clinical assessment is needed to determine whether the existing dentures are an appropriate reference for the new set, or whether a fresh approach is more appropriate.
What Are the Limitations?
Copy dentures replicate the existing design, which may include features that are no longer clinically ideal. For example:
• If bone and gum tissue have changed significantly since the original dentures were made, a straight copy may not fit as well as expected
• If the original bite was not ideal, copying it may reproduce the same issue
• Copy dentures are typically not suitable if the original dentures no longer fit well
Your dentist will advise whether copying the existing design is clinically appropriate, or whether modifications should be incorporated.

Fees and Subsidies
Denture fabrication, including copy dentures, may be partially covered under CHAS for eligible patients. Fees vary depending on the type of denture, materials used, and laboratory costs. Ask your dentist for a full fee breakdown before proceeding.
Our team sees many patients who have worn the same dentures for years and are uncertain about having new ones made. We discuss the options available, including whether copy dentures are suitable, after a clinical assessment. CHAS subsidies for dentures are available at all our clinics.
